Navajo Nation
There is no polished website for this one. I have led 2 different mission teams to this area in the past and it has been a rewarding trip. There are some parts of the Reservation that feel like the Third World. While the two other mission trips are what the North American Mission Board (NAMB) call Focus Cities, this area is one of those lesser known jewels of ministry. Bro. Al and his wife are the only NAMB missionaries to the entire state of Arizona that are assigned to the Native American tribes there. The Navajo tribe alone takes up almost 1/5th of the state of Arizona. That is a lot of work for one couple. He works hard to equip and place pastors in the area, but its exhausting work and now there is a possibility that his funding will be pulled from NAMB.
When I have served there in the past, we have done VBS for the children and youth as well as services for adults. We have helped with repairs to church property and also done service projects in the community. We built portable outhouses that could be used for tent revivals. Al and his wife now have a vision to lead out in a parenting initiative to connect with parents as they struggle to connect with their children in the changing environment of the Reservation.
One practical difference in this trip would be that we would be driving. Both Baltimore and San Diego would be probably flying trips. There is a good chance would could utilize RV's on the Arizona trip. I have included a few pictures from my past trips to give you a brief idea of the area.

Al and Charlotte Campsen - Missionaries to the Native Americans
A Hogan - A traditional dwelling. You still see these quite a bit on the Reservation.
Many Farms is one of the many communities where ministry is needed.
You will find beauty right in the middle of the desert. Every picture is a postcard.
There is a little story behind this picture of the double rainbow. I don't typically ask for signs from God, but on the preview trip I took, I was driving back home praying that if God wanted me to bring my college students to the Navajo Reservation, please confirm it somehow. No sooner had I finished that conversation with God than this double rainbow appeared. I know it sounds a little hokie, but it was just a reminder of His promises and how He always keps them. Sometimes not acting is disobedience. I knew that at that point, I was going to bring my students, whether it was the right thing or not. It turned out to be a wonderful trip.
